based on four quarters
The narration was repeated daily and lasted all day: two tideslengths, to be exact, corresponding to the halves of my life and work. The First Flood, so to speak, covered my adventures from the death of my father and my brother, through the killing of the Chimera, to my marriage to Princess Philonoë — roughly from my nineteenth through my twenty-seventh year; the First Ebb discovered my reign in Lycia and the establishment of my family, through my growing discontentment with my contentment, to Pegasus’s inability to get off the ground, twenty-eighth through thirty-sixth year; the Second Flood covered my adventures from the time of my leaving Lycia to consult the Old Man of the Marsh (actually the prophet Polyeidus), through my travels in search of the horsenip herb hippomanes, to my idyll with Amazonian Melanippe, thirty-seventh through forty-fifth year; the Second Ebb discovered my attempted flight to Olympus, through my long free-fall from Pegasus, to the end of my chronological life, forty-sixth through fifty-fourth year. The thirty-six-year period, divided into eighteen-year cycles and nine-year quarters, was a compromise as I remember between the Polyeidic “solar” life-calendar, a seventy-two-year span based on a three-hundred-sixty-day year of twelve thirty-day months, and the Melanippic or Amazonian “lunar” life-calendar, based on four quarters of approximately fourteen years each (though Amazons do not acknowledge annual units), metaphorically correspondent to the phases of the moon and the four stages of female sexuality (birth to puberty, puberty to sexual maturity, sexual maturity to menopause, menopause to death– the life expectancy of Amazons, reckoned in Polyeidic terms, is fifty-six “years”; they begin menstruating at age “fourteen,” on the average, and cease about age “forty-two”). It was, finally, a distinguishing feature of this ideal Bellerophoniad that while the length and periodicity of the narration were constant, the amplitude of the narrative varied like the range of the tides with the narrator’s energy, itself a function of his concentration or distraction. Yes, yes, the tale was told to its fullest heights and depths twice per lunar month, when the pulls so to speak of Polyeidus and Melanippe were perfectly aligned; at the summer-solstitial full moon in particular, I recollect, my tale achieved a pitch of eloquence– a phenomenon no doubt to be accounted for by the latitude and longitude of tidewater Maryland. Contrariwise, twice each month the narration was unusually flat and shallow, especially in the neighborhood of the equinoxes — and distracted, as though the pure Bellerophonic voice were tugged and co-opted now by Polyeidus this way, now Melanippe that; not to the end of dramatic harmony and tension, but discordantly, to stalemate and stagnation.

Those years — 1965-1973 — were the American High Sixties. The Vietnam War was in overdrive through most of the period; the U.S. economy was fat and bloody; academic imperialism was as popular as the political kind. Among Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s ambitions was to establish major university centers at each end and the middle of the Thomas E. Dewey Thruway (Stony Brook, Albany, Buffalo) as a tiara for the Empire State’s 57-campus university system. SUNY/Buffalo therefore was given virtual carte blanche to pirate professors away from other universities and build buildings for them to teach in: At one dizzy point in its planning, Gordon Bunshaft’s proposed new campus complex for the school was reported to be the largest single architectural project in the world, after Brasilia. Eighty percent of the populous English department I joined had been hired within the preceding two years, as additions to the original staff; so numerous were our illustrious immigrants from raided faculties, troubled marriages, and more straitlaced life-styles, we came to call ourselves proudly the Ellis Island of Academia. The somewhat shabby older buildings and hastily built new ones, all jam-packed and about to be abandoned, reinforced that image.

My children weren’t the ones asking me the question.
I was inquiring of myself. Years down the road, what would I
be able to say that I did in 2002, while Israel was fighting
for its very existence in the war on terror? That I launched
a thunderous barrage of faxes? That I rallied cyber-troops
with forwarded material? That I verbally attacked CNN at a
cocktail party? Had I done something that mattered? Or was
history repeating itself, like America ignoring the Holocaust
during the ’30s and ’40s, only now it was my generation’s turn
my turn? Israel was under attack. The Jewish people were under
attack. And I was treating a matter of life and death like it
was a PTA election. It was beginning to bother me.
Oh, I had made some sacrifices. I cancelled my subscription to
the New York Times — for a whole week, between Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur. I “marched” to the Capitol. On an air-conditioned
bus. I contributed to the Israel Emergency Fund and sent flowers
to friends in Israel via the Internet. But not enough to really
make a dent on my credit card.
First Inaugural Address
We observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration of freedom, symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning; signifying renewal, as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three quarters ago.
In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.
Now the trumpet summons us again, not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are; but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, “rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation”, a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.
Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?
In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility. I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it. And the glow from that fire can truly light the world.
And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.
My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.
Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth, God’s work must truly be our own.

As time moves on, more and more men are adopting better grooming habits. It was inevitable when you consider the importance placed on appearances in this day and age. Therefore men all around the world are seeking out the best face care for men in order to maintain their healthy appearance and youthful radiance. Now, before you dismiss this new-age way of keeping your mug looking great at all times, you should consider the many benefits of caring for your skin, and taking a little time each day to look your best.
There is plenty to go around when it comes to face care for men these days. In fact, you need to really consider what you want the products to do for your skin prior to making any purchases. You see, there are a number of brand names out there that develop skin care treatments specifically for men. If you didn’t already know it, men have a different kind of skin than women do. It is common for men to have thicker, oilier and more acne prone complexions. Women also have smaller pores than men typically do. However, it is helpful to know what skin type you have specifically prior to buying any face care products for men.
To give you an idea, there are a number of skin care brands for men. Some of these are Jack Black, Sharps, Lab Series, and Clarins for Men. All of which offer great skin care products like moisturizers, shaving gels, under-eye balms, aftershaves, and face scrubs. These are quality face care products that can all be acquired online through sites like Sephora.com.
Face care for men has its basics just like skin care regimens for women. These are the cleanser, moisturizer, post shave healer, under-eye treatments, and scrub. If you are unsure what these face care products for men do, let’s go over the basics. A facial cleanser is used morning and night to cleans the delicate facial skin, while a scrub can be used once to three times each week, and sloughs dead skin cells off the face. This helps to reveal the more youthful skin beneath. A moisturizer and under-eye cream or gel should be used daily to hydrate the skin and delicate eye area. After using this face care for men, you will soon notice a difference in your skin’s texture. It will improve as weeks pass, and the fine lines and wrinkles will diminish. Furthermore, skin care regimens for men help to prevent new lines from forming as well. As you age, you will appreciate these topical treatments, and find it more necessary to use them daily. Even the manliest of men can benefit from the right face care products.

It’s no longer a matter of whether there is another Tiger Woods girlfriend lurking out there, but who – and how many women on the side he had.
The latest rumored Tiger fling? Cori Rist. The New York Daily News is linking Woods to the “delicious blond,” who won’t confirm or deny reports.
The story fits his M.O.: it’s said that Woods met Rist, a New Yorker who is a regular at some of Manhattan’s better clubs, at Butter last year.
“They went on to another party,” says an insider. “One thing led to another and, pretty soon, Tiger was flying her to hook up with him on tour.”
“Tiger would typically get a large suite at a hotel. Someone would book Cori an adjacent room, so she wouldn’t be seen coming into his room.”
Sources say Cori Rist found the intrigue fun.
“He would get the presidential suite,” says the same source. “It was the ultimate in luxury. The trouble is, he never wanted to leave the room.”

JOIN THE CLUB: Cori Rist is the latest woman to be linked to Tiger Woods.
A longtime buddy, someone Tiger Woods trusted, recalls the star introducing him to Rist: “I remember she was quite attractive,” says the pal.
After about six months of sneaking around, though, ” started to get tired of being cooped up. She felt like a bird in a gilded cage.”
When the newspaper ran all of these claims past Rist, who lives in a posh pad on the East Side, she said simply “No comment at this time.”
Maybe she just doesn’t want to be sucked into the media storm … or maybe she’s exploring her options like some of Tiger’s other ladies.
He paid off Rachel Uchitel, according to Radar, while Jaimee Grubbs has already sold her story (and pics, and voicemail) to the highest bidder.
Kalika Moquin has also been linked to Tiger Woods, as has Jamie Jungers, the fourth mistress to come forward to the press as of yesterday.
How many more than there be? According to reports, possibly 4-5 more … at least. And you know some are actually telling the truth too.

WASHINGTON – A House Democrat says someone from the White House social secretary’s office should have helped the Secret Service clear people into last week’s state dinner, saying “even Walmart has a greeter.”
Continuing a 10-day uproar over the security breach last Tuesday, Rep. Loretta Sanchez of California told NBC’s “Today” show she believes Congress has a right to hear social secretary Desiree Rogers explain how a Virginia couple got into the state dinner without invitations.
Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican, joined Sanchez in demanding Rogers’ testimony on Friday, a day after Secret Service director Mark Sullivan took responsibility for the incident in an appearance before the House Homeland Security Committee.
Oregon tree cutters safe after 2 nights in snow
MEDFORD, Ore. – A search of the mountains near the Oregon-California border was called off Thursday after a couple returned from a Christmas tree hunt, saying they got stuck in the snow for two days.
Jennifer and Keith Lee told Jackson County sheriff’s deputies their all-wheel drive Subaru got high-centered on a remote road leading into California on the south side of Mount Ashland.
“This morning they got enough rocks to put under the tires to get it freed up,” sheriff’s Lt. Pat Rowland said.
Rowland said the couple used a cell phone to contact police from a small town near Medford as soon as they heard searchers were looking for them. Deputies were interviewing the couple, who had been missing since Tuesday.
A search began Wednesday with Sno-Cats and ATVs. Jennifer, 38, and Keith, 36, had told their four children, ages 8 to 18, that they hoped to bring back a silvertip fir, a prized tree found only at high elevations.
An initial search by helicopter and ground searches turned up nothing in the Siskiyou Mountains south of Medford, where the couple got stuck for four hours last year while getting their tree, authorities said.
The couple apparently had strayed into a road system that crosses the border into California, Rowland said.
Like thousands of Oregonians each year, the Lees bought their Christmas tree permit from the local national forest office and headed into the mountains, police said.
The couple first went tree hunting Monday but didn’t find what they wanted, so they set out again Tuesday after the kids went to school. Jennifer Lee asked a friend to pick up their 8-year-old daughter.
Each year searches are mounted for a few who get stranded or lost while hunting for Christmas trees in Oregon, Rowland said.
Keith Lee’s uncle said his nephew was familiar with the woods from frequent camping trips and backcountry motorcycle riding; was good with cars, being the manager of an auto parts store; and always carried a cell phone.
